Dan C. Turrentine, III

http://equivocalcatharsis.com/articles/danturrentine.htm

27.01.1908 - 27.09.2006

Dan C. Turrentine Dan C. Turrentine, who retired as manager of the Wine Advisory Board at age 60 to start his own wine brokerage business, died Wednesday at his home in San Rafael. He was 98 years old. Turrentine is remembered in the California wine business for founding Turrentine Brokerage, which is located in Novato and employs 15 people including his son Bill and his grandson, Matt. Turrentine is also remembered for innovative promotions at the Wine Advisory Board, including six winemaker cookbooks which sold over a million copies. Prior to running the Wine Advisory Board, Turrentine joined the staff of the Wine Institute where he became assistant manager. He obtained rail rate reductions on wine and collaborated with the U.C. Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology to start an industry-wide program of certified vines that has provided generations of wine grape growers with superior plant materials. Turrentine was born in New York City. His mother died when he was six years and he was sent to live with relatives in New Orleans. He helped them run a boarding house and eventually worked his way through Tulane University. A fascinating year working as a tutor for the two sons of Robert Scripts, proprietor of the Scripps Howard Newspaper chain, helped him to launch a career as a newspaper reporter. His first newspaper job was for the El Paso Herald-Post but he was determined to make his way to San Francisco, the only city that he thought was comparable to New Orleans. He finally snagged a spot with the San Francisco News and later with the San Francisco Chronicle. He left the Chronicle to join the Wine Institute in 1941. After Pearl Harbor, he took a leave of absence and joined the U.S. Navel Reserve. By the end of the war, he had been promoted to Lieutenant Commander. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence as an administrative officer with Bombing Squadron 22. One week before the Independence was torpedoed, he was transferred with his squadron to the Island of Munda in order to participate in the attack on Rabaul, the hub of Japanese air power in the South Pacific. As U.S. forces tightened the noose around Rabaul, his air group was transferred first to the small section of Bougainville heroically captured and defended by U.S. Marines, and later to Green Island. He received a bronze star for service in this campaign. Eventually he was ordered stateside for a short break at the Naval Air Station, Seattle, where he met and married Barbara Ewart, now his widow, living in San Rafael. He is also survived by two sons, Dennis Turrentine of San Rafael and Bill Turrentine of Fairfax, and by five grandsons, Matt (and his wife Erin), Donal (and his wife Emma), Peter, Joseph and John. He was a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Marin and for 33 years a member of the San Rafael Elk's Lodge. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Rita Catholic Church in Fairfax on Saturday, September 30th, 2006 at 11:00 AM. There will be a Celebration of His Life on Sunday, October 29th, 2006 at 3:00 PM at the Unitarian Fellowship of Marin, 240 Channing Way, San Rafael. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice of Marin Foundation, 17 E. Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Larkspur, CA 94939 or to Homeward Bound of Marin, 199 Greenfield Avenue, 2nd Floor, San Rafael, CA 94901-2622.

Published in the Marin Independent Journal on 9/29/2006.

WE had a beautiful service for Grandad on Saturday. Each of his five grandsons went up to the pulpit after the Mass and said a few words on his behalf. We will miss him, but -- God-willingly -- he is in a better place. He died with a scapular on, which gives us Catholics some hope.

TSG and I will probably be going down to California this weekend for the funeral.

I can't sleep.

But there's a perfectly reasonable explanation.

We've been living a crazy, hectic schedule, with bedtimes in the mid-am's and wake-up calls at eleven am and luncheon at four pm, or none at all.

Dinner tonight was at a more-or-less reasonable eight-thirty pm. More reasonable, that is, than the night before which STARTED at ten-ten and was still going THE NEXT DAY.

Anyways, we've been having fun, but also we have been working.

I did brain work all day today, and since we're "out at the farm," that means I went into town and sat at a coffee shop and drank caffeine and sat and sat and so on ALL DAY. Which means that I have PLENTY of energy. And, since I have only been up twelve or thirteen hours, I can't sleep.

Besides, there are stars to look at, and animal noises to hear from outside, and the wife's gentle breathing to hear inside.

EVERYBODY should read, know, and understand the implications of THIS:

Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests. The dangers of pre- or post-natal exposure to this complex mixture of carcinogens, developmental toxins and neurotoxins have never been studied.

So, basically, if we "went back to the land," cancer would disappear.

our neighbor has a mental problem

We think that there is something wrong with our neighbor.

He is our next-door neighbor here on the ground floor, but we think something is wrong with him upstairs *wink* *wink*, if you catch my drift.

Periodically, but frequently, we observe these symptoms:

1) He exits his room, next door to us.

2) He slams his door behind him

3) As if #2 weren't offensive enough on its own, he then rattles the door handle and bangs repeatedly and loudly on the door.

4) He walks off.

It happens seemingly EVERY time he leaves the apartment. Our explanations are either:

A) He has a mental problem.

OR

B) He locks himself out of his apartment 3-4 times every 24 hours, which, for that to be true, we think that A must be true as well.

He also exhibits the following non-neighborly character traits:

- constantly-on and LOUD T.V. even in A.M. hours, when he is home
- when he is at home all day, like on the weekends, he is quiet for long periods of time which are only broken by him YELLING expletives and phrases such as "C'MON GUYS!!!"

Well, I'm off to Costco!

Well, TSG's out with the Auntie running around doing errands and various Auntie's-business-related things...

I'm at home working (in front of the computer, all day).

A few days ago we went to an amazing Thai restaurant that is just across the way from our little apartment here... They have incredible food, and I was just heating up some of the left-overs for lunch.

I keep getting calls from people who want me to do website work for them, so I guess the good ol' days of web design are still here. I was beginning to think that I would have to start looking for contract programming jobs, but never mind... Of course, I can't charge as much as I used to... But people are still willing to pay for a professionally-designed website.

We spent lots of the day looking for houses online...

Our basil plant is doing better -- we stripped off the dying leaves and left the one stalk that actually looks healthy. We've been watering it less and keeping it by the lamp. I'm on basil-watering restriction because I caused a great flood in the kitchen a few weeks back.

We decided to go "out on the town" this evening, so we headed out to a 24-hour drugstore that has wireless and sandwiches and ice cream and lattes, and then we got jabbered at by a fellow who told us and the rest of the coffee shop his entire life story and drug experiences.

Then we asked the IKEA chick why she worked there...

Well, TSG's out working on our friends' farm, I'm sitting at the dining room table working computers.

We've got a spot of rain outside -- first since we've been back, since I moved here I think, I was listening to French pop music, now bluegrass on internet radio.

Our poor Basil plant is dying, quite rapidly.

We finally got some pictures from our wedding, but not the official ones yet..!

I've been dismantling my tablet in order to RMA it. The keyboard/support broke and it's been quite useless for some time.

I'm about to hoof it over to market and pick up some milk and hopefully some mate. Our organics delivery didn't come last night, so I've got to investigate that too.

Well, the wife and I spent the weekend in hibernation, combatting the evil flu of megadeath.

We're living in a funky apartment in a funky old building in Portland, right near Burnside, and about a mile from downtown. We're within easy walking distance of everything we could possibly need or want, including a natural pharmacy with an incredible selection of homoepathic remedies.

We discovered that particular pharmacy yesterday, while we were stumbing around trying to find something to combat the flu.

This wednesday, we get our first "bin" from these guys.

I spoke with my man Chim this morning, and we're getting everything squared away for a Bachelor Party out in MN.

Some blokes were going to get one together for me back in Cali, but I skipped the state before that could go down.

Which is probably for the best because I'm the lighest of lightweights now -- TSG and I were both feeling one teeny glass of wine a few weeks ago when we had it. We ended up giving the bottle away to other people, and it barely looked like we'd had any...

So the bachelor party? Yeah, I'll be ever-so-slying watering the plants at whichever watering hole we go to.

Either that or tossing up my cookies after two and a half beers.

So TSG and I are on the new, 3-5 meals a day + mandatory siesta plan now...

However, today we missed two meals and the siesta, so we're not doing so well.

I spent the day working -- staring at a glowing screen -- in my apartment, and TSG was working on an as-yet-undisclosed-to-me carpentry (I think) project out at our friends' farm where she is still house-sitting, er, farm-sitting.

Then I went and picked up my olive green suit (3-button) that I will be wearing in 10 days when we GET MARRIED!!!

Aparently, the fashion rule for men's suits (these days, anyway) is that you can fasten any combination of buttons, BUT NEVER THE BOTTOM ONE.

Man, life in the fortnight before getting married is HECTIC!!!

TSG's out farm-sitting at our friends' farm. She briefly stopped by my apartment today to finish sewing her wedding dress, and then we took it down to the post office and mailed it out to Minnesota.

Then we went used- and unfinished-furniture shopping. The unfinished business was too expensive: only the pine stuff was even remotely close to our price range. So... we went to the thrift stores and to goodwill, where we found a $15 bookcase (nice price) and a $30 dresser (a bit steep).

Now TSG's on the way back out to the farm, and I'm in the my last few, dwindling days of bachelorhood forever.

I can't wait!

I was going to post this in my top secret Good as Gold Ideas (tm) file, but I'll just stick it out here in the public domain for you guys to dwell on.

Acoustic Modeling Headphones (or Earbuds). When you walk into the room, they would use some kind of passive echolocation (or invisible lasers? uv/ir leds?) to create an acoustic model of the room and then the dsp in the audio player or headphone unit would model the room virtually in your sound.

Imagine...

While wearing headphones, you walk into a metal or concrete room and the reverb inside your head gets all springy.

Now wouldn't that be cool?

Of course, there's other things to worry about, like World Hunger...

Ay!

Our wedding rings came in the mail today.

We were wondering if it was going to take a while for them to get here, and we were afraid that we were cutting it too close, but the guy overnighted them to us without us having to pay one cent more.

I bought a $299 suit yesterday, for $99. That was pretty good.

AND, we pretty much finished moving all our stuff into the new apartment...

Now TSG has just the basics back at her place to get her through till we get married and she moves in to our new pad.

It's a pretty good little home we are in the process of making. Now, as soon as we get settled and married, we can start looking for a house to buy.

Thermoacoustic Refrigerant Pilot

Thermoacoustic refrigeration is a new technology which provides cooling without the need for refrigerants such as chloroflurocarbons. The basic mechanism is very simple and efficient. A loudspeaker creates sound in a hollow tube which is filled with an ordinary gas. The initial project developed a working model of an acoustic refrigerator. A prototype was made from 2 feet of PVC tubing and a hifi loudspeaker, which develops a cooling of 180 F when using air and being driven with 1.5 watts of acoustic power. This project also studied the effects of the design and location of the thermoacoustic stack and the relative efficacy of different gases. Eliminating the need to recycle CFC gases in refrigeration units would also eliminate any incidental releases of coolant gases. CFC's have been linked to ozone destruction.

I want this in my car, instead of the regular, belt-driven, refrigerant-using A/C.

...Goodlatte said on the House floor U.S. gamblers were spending over $6 billion a year on the untaxed sites.

What the heck is this?

Don't politicians have better things to do & worry about?

This is a pure financial scam -- they want a piece of the pie.

Did they consult the American public as to what everybody wants? Hmm...

I mean, online poker is probably a bad thing, but what about majority rule?

Anyway, they won't be able to stop it.

I drove down from PDX to SFO last night, from about 8pm to 5:30am. I watched the nearly-full moon traverse the entire sky over the course of my journey. My favorite road sign from the trip? Outside an R.V. park in Southern Oregon an advertisement read:

"You're Here!"

We've been getting TSG settled up here in PDX the last few days. Went to the St. Paul Rodeo, which was AWESOME, and found her a house with straight female housemates via craigslist where she can live till we get married.

I've been spending A LOT of time in the last few days in coffee houses and tea bars in PDX working, though, because I went more or less AWOL from my job in SF. I mean, I can work remote no problem, but they kindof like having me there, and we have DEADLINES to meet.

But it's funny overhearing snippets of conversation...

About how so many people are pro-abortion but against harming animals in any way, shape, or form. That's a non-sequiter if I've ever heard one.

On Wednesday, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA), quoting from a Pentagon report, announced that since 2003, over 500 weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq. According to Santorum, these sarin- and mustard-filled projectiles prove that "weapons of mass destruction are, in fact, in Iraq." With news this important, one would expect wide-spread coverage, right? Wrong. The so-called main stream media is silent on this discovery, instead painting their own view of Iraq.

Joe Diffie uses the word -- and I use the word "word" loosely here -- "ungone" in one of his songs, Good News Bad News. This is why I hate country. Here I was, jamming out, grooving to the song, thinking he sounds a bunch like Merle Haggard, I can dig this, and then he has to go and use a "word" like "ungone."

Aaah! It's July!

I've more or less finished the uber-secret wedding website, and we more or less finished the invitations -- a few truant responders still need to get up their addresses...

TSG's been here since Monday night; her aunt and her aunt's niece left on Thursday and continued down south to LA.

We are finishing up a few wedding things here and then we are going to head up north to PDX together in the Silver Bullet.

I have been nominally working from home this past week (except for Monday) so today TSG and my mother are out on the town shopping (for flower girl dresses) and I'm plugging away at one of my programming projects, trying to make up for lost time.

I'm making good progress; maybe I'll even get some guitar picking time in this afternoon.

This is completely unrelated to everything else, but...

I have a friend, who for the purposes of this story, I shall call Neal.

When Neal was, is, has always been and will always be a troublemaker.

So at a ripe young age, his mother and step-father shipped him off to a military boarding school to 'straighten him out.'

When he got there, it was the usual experience. Rebel boys flaunting the rules, hiding from the officers and calling the other cadets names.

There were more rules than Neal cared to follow, but sometimes the punishments were enough to deter even him from breaking them... or from gettting caught.

The boys lived in barracks, eight to a room. There were no toilets in the rooms, just a sink.

In order to use the restroom at night -- since there were no restrooms in the barracks buildings -- they had to get in full dress, from starched hat and collar to polished buttons and shoes. Then they had to march down the rows of barracks buildings to the guardhouse. If they met one of the night guards (of which there were PLENTY) they had to salute and probably do some kind of drill, or push-ups, or something.

Of course, you could always sneak out in your skivvies and home you didn't get caught, but if you did, they'd be drilling you till the morning light.

So... as I said before, there were no toilets in the rooms.

Just a sink.

And one time, Neal said, he happened to be in another boys' barracks room.

And, glancing over at the sink, he saw an eggbeater.

I've been playing guitar and singing all morning, as well as doing a little bit of work on the top secret wedding website and eating breakfast.

Here's some of the songs I've been picking:
Old Crow Medicine Show -- Eutaw
Old Crow Medicine Show -- Caroline
Old Crow Medicine Show -- Tear it Down

Alison Kraus -- Gravity

Billy Bragg & Wilco -- Hesitating Beauty

Johnny Cash -- Darling Companion
Johnny Cash -- Get Rhythm
Johnny Cash -- Folsom Prison Blues
Johnny Cash -- Ring of Fire

And now my voice is shot because I don't know the first thing about singing. Luckily, one of TSG's aunts is a professional musician and has offered to give me voice lessons.

I found an interesting interview with Joseph Pearce about E.F. Schumacher, who -- I didn't know this till twenty minutes ago -- converted to Catholicism.

...the whole Catholic concept of subsidarity is that both economic and politics should be done on a human scale; it's not only about small businesses but also about small government, that we want the de-volution of power away from big central government back to regional government; we want laws that do not encroach upon the rights of the family...

Well folks, this here bachelor has done most of his tasks for before-all-the-folks-get back.

I got up early this morning, took the flat flat tire off the suburban, hit up morning mass, made it to the office and put in four solid hours of work, went to Costco and got the initial family shopping done, high-tailed it home with the frozens and refrigeratables, unloaded, took the suburban tire down to the shop and had it home, and grabbed a banana malt on the way home.

It's time for my second cup of tea -- even if it keeps me up tonight -- I've got some work to do on the uber-secret wedding website. Shh! Nobody's supposed to know about it yet, but the first invitations are in the mail, so I have to hurry up and finish it.

So my bachelor lifestyle is more balanced in its dietary and nutritional intakes. Although I did finish off a bag of turkey-jerky yesterday (0% fat). Someday I want to grow lean, grass-fed beef that is leaner and healthier than that turkey, and make jerky out of it.

Good Earth Chai Tea has an ingredient list of:

- Black Tea
- Chicory Root
- Cardamom
- Peppper
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
- Cloves
- other spices
- Natural Flavors

Their stuff is good, but I don't think it would be too hard to whip up a batch -- or to develop a recipe of my own. Especially 'cause I drink the durn stuff so much.

I biked the 7 miles to get my car this morning in only 30 minutes, though by the end of it I was getting tired and committing that oh-so-grievous sin of bike riding, thinking like a car. And you know what THAT means: stopping at red lights, going the right way on streets, no sidewalks. So I took even longer than I had to.

And I got the car back, after a tidy sum of money, let me tell you. They replaced the front transmission seal and the rear engine seal, which is a heckuvalot of labor. I would have done it myself but... it was a heckuvalot of labor. Probably would have taken me 2-3 days, by myself, and been rough. And I've got things to do right now, let me tell you.

But anyways, now the car has more power than it ever has had before -- but it also revs high. I think perhaps the overdrive solenoid didn't get hooked up or something, because it's not kicking down out of fourth (I think). It's probably getting terrible gas mileage too, but oh well. I'll take a look at it soon. Maybe it's just better because the whole system's tight-as-glue now. I dunno.

But I can make the rear end bump and shake at 75 mph @ 4,000 rpm, accelerating uphill. And that's quite something, ladies and gentlemen, for a 15 year old, 4-cylinder Volvo.

[W]ithin the very secretive and bizzarre society of the terrorist community, the US Military has allies. We have people at the TOP. People who knew where Zarqawi was, and could pinpoint his location. The armor of Islam as terror is cracking. That is the salient point. Taste that. Taste the flavor of it, roll it around your tongue like a fine wine. Even within the terrorist organizations themselves, Terrorism is beginning to crumble. Relish this moment.

The Amish look was good. Some people said it looked funny, but I LIKE looking funny. It keeps people on their toes. It keeps them reminded about DEATH, which is funny.

Death is funny, for it holds no power over us.

It's what's after death that is not funny. Then, when we have to account for every action of our lives, for every effort we made to help others towards the Cross, and for every shameful, selfish, hateful deed as well.

How will we be able to laugh then?

- I dropped Silver off so that my volvo mechanic can flush the tranny fluid for me and maybe troubleshoot the oil leak. I don't have the time right now, 'cause I'm working so much, which I guess means that I do have the money to pay for it. But because I can do so much of my own work, I'm driving a hard bargain for their work. They've got to compete with me.

- Musician's Friend has a twenty-three thousand dollar mandolin that showed up in their latest catalog. I was reading it in the men's room and about durn near fell off the pot! Jeez! Look at all those zeros! (or nines)

- After I dropped Silver off I biked home. It was a good enforced 35-minutes of workout. I just checked google maps, and it looks like its only about... seven miles. That makes an average speed of... 5 mph.

Hmm. Looks like I've got a TON of exercising to do to get up to snuff. Now, if I did that every day...

I need to find a way to "enforce" a workout upon myself each day. I kindof like the idea of parking my car seven miles away and having to bike each way each day... But then what do you do in an emergency? Oh well, you can't be living your life in fear of all possible contingencies...

- Anyone need some shotglasses? I'm cleaning house before TSG and I get married (in 67 days).

- I put a bunch of stuff on Craig's List, too. I like the system, haven't really sold much on it yet.

- I put a bunch of books up on Amazon sellers, too, and thought I didn't think any would sell, three sold last night. So that's pretty good...

I don't know what it is about web programming -- maybe everything is this way -- but after doing it a while, I become less productive, and eventually end up doing more harm than good. Then it is best to take a breather, and come back to it. When I do return, it is suprisingly easy to finish.

So the trick is recognizing the point of diminishing returns, quitting at the appropriate moment, and then returning to conquer. Weird...

Yeah... But the main cutting board in my house is wood. And we've never replaced it, in 20+ years. Besides, wood is cheap. Replacing the counters every 5 years or 10 years would be fine, although I think a good cleaning from time to time (with bleach?) would keep things sanitary...

I'm living a strange life right now, folks.

My entire family's in Scotland, TSG's 600 miles away, and I'm working long hours, with many side projects and (part of) a wedding and honeymoon to plan.

I jumped out of my car today when I got home at 7-ish and went for a run, right in my jeans and work boots.

Then I did a sporadic bit of different work outs, played a few blues songs, and fiddle with a computer.

Making a bachelor dinner is quite an experience. I think that generally I am a decent cook; today was bizzare.

The thing about a bachelor dinner is that it rarely appears all at once. Unlike dinner in a gourmet restaurant, all the dishes are brought in succession.

So I had cream-cheese-on-energy-bar, miso soup, broccoli & carrots, apple, sausages-with-cheese-in-a-tortilla, and a beer. I think I covered all the food groups.
